Now, though still only a grad student, Smith can lay claim to a major
score as a scientist. He's part of a small team of researchers who've
discovered a new species of a "pre-dinosaur" that lived in New Mexico
210 million years ago -- the first such find in North America. It's long been accepted that dinosaurs emerged quickly because of
die-offs of other animals. The new findings indicate that dinosaurs and
pre-dinosaurs -- scientifically classified as basal dinosauromorphs --
lived together for as long as 15 million to 20 million years.
