Eating your greens really is good for you – munching on broccoli twice a week can halve men's chances of developing the most dangerous form of prostate cancer.

Men who ate the vegetable had a 45 per cent lower risk of developing a malignant tumour in the prostate, a four-year US study of 29,000 adults revealed.

Cauliflower gave even better results, with a 52 per cent reduction. Both are thought to be rich in compounds which protect against damage to DNA.
