NP Rank:
Guerilla Tree Planting
I just read about the Vancouver Public Space Network and am very excited about their new initiative to repopulate parts of Vancouver with Western Red Cedar trees, using guerrilla gardening tactics. Love it!
Earlier this year, the VPSN teamed up with Fairview-area guerrilla gardener Justin Tilson who had managed to procure a substantial number of Western Red-cedar (Thuja plicata) seedlings. We decided that we would help to plant these seedlings in an effort to repopulate the city with more of this once-ubiquitous and majestic species. Our plan is to focus on the Cedar Cottage neighbourhood: the historical community situated within an almost triangular boundary linking Kingsway, Broadway and Nanaimo streets. At one time, the towering cedars would have been abundant here. Of course there are still some good examples (like Clark Park) but we reckoned that there was also the opportunity for a few more.
UPDATE: VPSN is having a guerilla tree planting event on October 21st in Vancouver. Come and plant some a these.
"Please join members of the Vancouver Public Space Network on Saturday
October 21st and support the 1000 Cedars in Cedar Cottage initiative. We'll
be meeting in the north parking lot @ Trout Lake Community Centre (3350
Victoria Drive, Victoria@17th) at 11am, rain or shine.
We have started planting small Western Redcedar seedlings and request your
help in reaching our goal! Please bring a spade, trowels and other tree
planting tools to help create Vancouver's newest urban forest.
