In a Forbes.com article Hackers try to reach out to improve their image.
"Middle America thinks we're stealing your social security numbers, raping your children and breaking into your bank account," he says. "The reality is, we are the ultimate explorers. We see a technology, and we want to know how it works."

Hackers are a necessary part of the IT ecosystem: to them, everyting is in permanent beta test, and they tend to discover flaws and unexplored advantages in existing systems. Hug a hacker today!

I don't really like the term "Hacker" to be used in that context (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_definition_controversy from more information in this issue).
