Hampstead Heath Swimming Ponds

The heath had no ponds until the 17th century. The much-loved tarns of water began as a string of reservoirs which were originally established to supply London with water. People have, however, now been swimming in these pools for generations. Since as early as 1860, and probably before, many hardy London folk have taken a dip before work. Even today a heady splash in a Hampstead pond early in the morning is accepted behaviour. It's a century-old tradition that becomes wonderfully welcome when things hot up in the summer months.

CAUTION: Do not swim in adjacent
ponds. As they are DANGEROUS!
