Exactly 25 years ago the word's first compact disc was produced at a Philips factory in Germany, sparking a global music revolution.More than 200 billion CDs have been sold worldwide since then and it remains the dominant format despite the growth in digital downloads.
The CD was jointly developed by Philips and Sony and the disc has also become a key storage method for computer users.
The first CD produced was The Visitors by Abba.
Piet Kramer, who was a member of the optical group at Philips during the disc's development, said: "When Philips teamed up with Sony to develop the CD, our first target was to win over the world for the CD.

enathu, Millions of £$ on initial research and development certainly paid
off for Philips and Sony. Good stuff.

I remember getting my first CD player soon after they first became available in Europe. I went to a large dealer in O'Connell Street (I think that they were knows as Studio One) only to be told by the dealer that CDs were a silly idea that would never catch on. He asid that he would not waste his time getting one for me and recommended a Pioneer PL12D turntable instead. Firtunately as I had worked in Philips during my summer holidays I managed to get a CD101. Then I discovered that the real problem was that there was only one disc available ... I have hated Dire Straits ever since.
