The Phoenix Rising Convention in New Orleans, May 17-21, 2007

One of the latest events planned by the Harry Potter fans while they wait impatiently for the last (sigh) book in the series to come out this summer;

Phoenix Rising promises, "The Borders Riverside Quidditch Classic, as always, will involve a
triple-elimination tournament in which the play will be vicious and the
competitors fierce. "

Phoenix Rising

Phoenix Rising, a conference devoted to all things Harry Potter,
will fuse the intensity of academic debate with the improvisation of
exploratory dialogue,  the rhythms of New Orleans with the colors and
pageantry of art. The conference will examine the novels, the movies,
and the extraordinary fan phenomenon during the day; then, attendees
will revel with the beat of the Crescent City — herself rising from ash
and flame — when evening advances.

Keynote Presentations

During the course of Phoenix Rising, attendees will have the opportunity to hear Phoenix Rising's Guests of Honor at a series of Keynote Presentations. These specially arranged events will address transformation in writing and the arts with presentations by experts in topics from film to game design to children's literature.

Except for Vicky Dann's lectures, these Keynote Presentations require an additional cost ticket, which attendees can buy through our registration system.

Transformation: From Text to Technology | Transformation: From Influence to Inspiration | Transformation: From Boxes to Bookshelves and Beyond | Transformation: From Fan to Fandom | Transformation: From Screenplay to Film Score | Transformation: From Story to Screenplay

Just look at some of the topics they have scheduled on:

  • development and production of the Harry Potter video games
  • the myriad changes that the Harry Potter books have had on the
publishing and bookselling industries, including the trends in what
publishers accept and stores stock in fantasy and science fiction, the
cross-over phenomenon between the adult and children's/young adult
audience, and how new promotions, such as midnight release parties,
became key pieces for promoting sales and connecting fans.
  • from both an academic and a practical standpoint, how an individual fan
experience is turned into a collective fandom experience through the
    growth of online fan communities.
  • film scoring, music.
  • story to screenplay.
  • Many presentations of scholarly papers: the List.

I can not WAIT for the last Harry Potter book to hit shelves...but then it will be the last...I seriously think Mrs. Rowling ought to consider Harry Potter, The Adult Years...Adrian Mole style... :(
