NP Rank:
Has Jamie bitten off more than can be chewed?...
Yes, it’s a mystery!
How did the master exponent of cockney sales patter and multi-millionaire cook and recipe compiler, Jamie Oliver, get his hands on over £1M of European money - intended for the benefit of one of the poorest areas of Europe, Cornwall - to tart up a storm threatened building on the peak high tide mark of a remote west coast beach to set up yet another 15 Restaurant franchise in the guise of ‘charity’? :
http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=61443
Some more burning questions:
1.How is it that the overly generous distributors of this ‘wonga’ who, incidentally, administer Cornwall’s European money from offices in England and not democratically from within Cornwall, did not consider that perhaps sincere charitably inclined multi-millionaires might be able to follow hunches under their own steam if underlying business prospects seem sound. How convincing is a show of seeming charitability when it is funded by public moneys undemocratically allocated from outside the area of designated benefit? These are the unelected undemocratically appointed bodies that decide and distribute Cornwall’s money from the great beyond:
http://www.southwestrda.org.uk
http://www.southwest-ra.gov.uk/swra/aboutus/whositsontheswra.shtml
This is what a political party mainly concerned with looking after Cornwall’s best interests has to say about this method of distribution:
http://www.mebyonkernow.org/Public/Stories/28-1.shtml
2.How is it that all the parties involved in this grossly reckless, short-sighted distribution of public funds have not taken note of and acted upon authoritative warnings regarding rising sea levels which, even now, in certain conditions, encroach upon the foundations of this expensively kitted out handy improvement to what is actually part of the Ashworth brothers’ empire on the privately owned beach at Watergate Bay? (See attached picture of a recent high tide encroaching on the base of the building).
Elsewhere in Cornwall this is being taken very seriously indeed:
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-global/w-localtoyou/w-devoncornwall/w-devoncornwall-countryside_environment/w-devon_cornwall-news-story5.htm
3. How ethical is it for the Extreme Academy / Fifteen Cornwall restaurant premises owner, Mr Ashworth, to be negotiating a 20 year lease of the building to the Fifteen Cornwall 'charity ' board of trustees whilst also involved in appointing trustees?
4. How unwise is it of all the parties concerned to have proceeded with this reckless distribution of public moneys when Restormel District Council public health warning signs concerning e coli contamination of the exposed stream that runs under the restaurant to the beach remain in place on the actual wall of the restaurant? (See pictures attached to this story)

http://www.newquayvoice.co.uk/nvnews/news/newsItem.php? http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=678
5.How is it that, with Cornwall already suffering huge and self-evidently unsustainable environmental losses and infrastructure gridlock under the burden generated by excessive emphasis by decision makers on tourism as an element in Cornwall’s economy, including the loss of so much primary residential housing to wealthy non-residents with more money than social conscience and blind to the social and economic damage and disruption caused by half empty villages and out of control local housing value inflation, it could not be readily perceived by all concerned that Watergate Bay is already under too much pressure as are the narrow twisting roads that lead to it?
http://www.matthewtaylor.info/local6016.html
6.How is it possible for Jamie Oliver, in the face of all the science and TV documentaries explaining the immediacy of global warming impacts both worldwide and at this particular location, to gleefully spout, in a radio interview, ‘Get on a plane, stay at the Watergate Bay Hotel!’. Is a ‘well done’ planet to be the piéce de resistance?

7.Why was a more suitable, ‘sustainable’ and elementally secure location for this enterprise, imbued with inspirational environmental awareness and leadership, with better prospects for and greater demonstrability of sustainable year round customer throughput, providing more constant levels of continuity of experience for the trainee chefs and causing much less environmental harm whilst delivering its laudable core objectives, not insisted upon by the undemocratically appointed and external Objective 1 funding cake cutters?
8.When will this emerging, long overdue and welcome cross party solidarity succeed in wresting much greater control from external institutions to put the year round economic, employment, social and housing needs of full time residents before the disruptive demands generated by tourism overload?:

Update 1 :
The events of 31st July 2006 ( Retrospective ):
As foretold by Shaz at:
http://www.cornwall24.co.uk/PNphpBB2-vi ... t-1282.htm
there was a kerfuffle at Restormel Borough Council offices on July 31st regarding a crafty plan to asset strip the car park at Watergate Bay , near Tregurrian:
http://www.newquayvoice.co.uk/nvnews/ne ... c246cecfeb
The Ashworth Brothers - Extreme Environmental Hypocrites....
It is strikingly paradoxical that the Ashworth Brothers who, through extreme hypermarketeering, have done the most to degrade and overload the privately owned beach at Watergate Bay and its surroundings with gross overdevelopment ;cause extreme coast road congestion; stimulate disproportionate associated luxury apartment construction for non-residential purposes in the valley above; exacerbate particulate and chemical contamination across the upper atmosphere by promoting gross fossil fuel consumption via Newquay airport traffic as an adjunct to their business; over-stuff the sea with a surfeit of novice ‘ surfers ’ to the detriment of overall public safety and enjoyment of the ocean - should be the first and loudest to squeal when Restormel Borough Council raises the anti-community idea of selling off the public amenity green field car park at Watergate bay to even more profiteering opportunists.
Of course Restormel Borough Council is renowned for pandering to external commercial interests and permitting the trashing of the environment of the central band of Cornwall with ill-considered construction ‘projects’:
( see: http://www.carlyonbaywatch.co.uk/news )
and propping up the immoral iniquity of houses being bought for holidays with unnecessary and un’affordable’ house building which serves the interests of opportunistic profiteers more than anyone else.
In this instance Restormel Borough Council really should remind itself of its primary duty of care and responsibility for the greater overall public good and abandon any idea of disposing of this valuable public leisure and recreation resource to any external operation, developer or otherwise.
At the same time the Ashworth Brothers should be more self-critical and review their role, by way of their out of control hypermarketeering of the ‘ Extreme ‘ Academy, the Watergate Bay Hotel, the Beach Hut restaurant and other ancillary activities such as the ' Extreme ' ' Academy ' ' Surfing ' Exploitation Factory:
( now with the additional Jamie Oliver fuss factor :
http://www.nowpublic.com/has_jamie_bitt ... _be_chewed ), in causing this situation in the first place by overdoing the commercialisation of the privately owned beach at Watergate Bay and bringing the attention of avaricious real estate developers to bear on what the Ashworths themselves have turned into a concreters’ klondike.
As partners and members of the Watergate Bay Environmental Tourism Trust (WETT) the Ashworth brothers really should have demanded more of themselves. Let’s hope their attempt to persuade Restormel Borough Council to retain the green field car park for their own business benefit and, by happy coincidence, the wider public good proves successful and marks a turning point from where they then apply themselves to protecting Watergate Bay from the damaging consequences of their own activities as well as those of others.
.
UPDATE 2 :
August 1st 2006
The Day After:
A small clique of councillors apparently wanted the above issue discussed in complete secrecy because of that hoary old stunt ' commercial confidentiality ' but the others forced them to have it debated in full council.Perhaps it's high time, given the direct vested interest relationship between Council executive salaries and the amount of business rates raked in that planning decisions are taken by an entirely different route altogether.
Anyway, following various input such as the above in letter form,a healthy vigorous on-site protest and a 1,000 signature petition Restormel Borough Council decided to hang on to the car park as a public amenity instead of casting it to the concreters. Drinks all round! (and perhaps most ironically, even for the Ashworth bruderbund too! )
UPDATE 3 :
Access to and ownership of Cornwall's beaches is an unfathomable mystery to many. As far as Watergate Bay is concerned do not expect simplicity!
Around the coast and estuaries of Cornwall, the Duchy of Cornwall claims the foreshore below the mean high water mark. The Duchy of Cornwall's claims are distinct from those of the Crown.
Most of the RNLI 's lifeguarding duties ( shouldn't it be the SLSA? - http://www.surflifesaving.org.uk/ ) are therefore conducted on privately owned land.
Does the Duchy of Cornwall make a financial contribution in lieu of providing a lifeguard service itself? No. It actually leases many beaches to District Councils for hefty fees for which the public picks up the bill!
This is an interesting area of study and thorough, reliable and authoritative references can be found at:
http://www.cornish-stannary-parliament. ... age54.html
As far as Watergate Bay is concerned owners of land adjacent to the mean high water mark,( amendments / additions welcome ), include:
The Building firm J T Cowling Ltd( Ripcurl Boardmasters Unleashed Music Festival SurfExploitation Exercise gig field)
http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:_p ... k&cd=4
The Ministry of Defence
The Ashworths (who 'own' only the part of the beach above the mean high water mark directly opposite the ' Extreme Academy ' /' Beach Hut ' / ' 15Foundation ' / ' Fifteen Cornwall ' Restaurant / ' Cornwall Foundation of Promises '/ Watergate Bay Hotel / Car Park etc etc etc on the sea side of the coast road),
The Carnanton ( take care when rambling!) Estate :
http://www.addieville.com/Cornwall
http://www.cornwallshooting.com/carnant ... .php:idea:
...and, of course,The Duchy of Cornwall :
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/tax-advice ... page_id=11
A Ministry of Defence trans-Atlantic optic fibre communications cable runs under the ' Extreme Academy ' /' Beach Hut '/ ' 15Foundation ' / ' FifteenCornwall ' Restaurant / ' Cornwall Foundation of Promises ' etc etc etc buildings and car park , just like the periodically e-coli contaminated stream .
'Tis enigmas wrapped in conundrums!
The access path to the beach is a long established public right of way.
UPDATE 4.
On August 22nd 2006, while redundancy notices and redundancy threats were simultaneously flying about Cornwall in various industries and in particular at IMERYS where around 700 job losses are threatened and the TGWU was negotiating on behalf of the workforce on the very same day, the government Minister for Employment and Welfare Reform,Jim Murphy, spent the bulk of his day in Cornwall in the kitchens at Watergate Bay.This couldn't illustrate better the extent to which New Labour has lost touch with the real needs, aspirations and priorities of the population and gives the appearance of being more concerned with froth than substance.

The John Ashworth and Ashworth Sons / Brothers operations at Watergate Bay, Newquay, Cornwall include The Extreme Academy ( Xtremeacademy ), The Beach Hut cafe / restaurant , The Watergate Bay Hotel, Jamie Oliver and his 15Restaurant franchise known as FifteenCornwall / Fifteen / Cornwall, the ' charity ' known as Cornwall Foundation of Promises , various flat and other accommodation letting enterprises and, of course, the car park that serves this multi - level mini entrepreneurial empire. Suffice to say, Watergate Bay is wilting under the pressure of such relentless greed.

So this is where all the Euro money has gone - wot no affordable houses in Cornwall ?
