Prolonged drought, fires all over the Southwest and weeks of triple-digit temperatures have even some of the most enthusiastic fireworks fans looking for alternatives this year.
Some great ideas for kids include giving them small flashlights or glow sticks, playing with water balloons or water guns and giving out silly string or bubbles.
Walk a little closer to the wild side, but still shy of explosive gulch, by offering sparklers and snappers (which explode when thrown like caps) to use under adult supervision with water sources close by.
