Before decimalisation. I think our coinage was so much better then; but the system was clearly designed so that "Johnny Foreigner" wouldn't be able to work out how much anything was.

It's strange for us now to think that coins were in circulation with several different sovereigns' portraits on the obverse (one might have found Elizabeth II, George VI, George V, and Edward VII all in the same pocket of change): for Queen Elizabeth has been on the throne ever since decimalisation, so all current British coins bear her portrait only.
