Nap Boosts Brain Power

When your boss tells you off for falling asleep on the job you can now tell them that in the long run it will boost efficiency!

Scientists from the University of California at Berkeley have found that people who took a nap during the day outperformed those who went on without sleep.

For years studies have been undertaken to try and see just how useful an afternoon sleep might be with little conclusive evidence one way or the other. The new study claims to show that an afternoon siesta really does improve performance.

If this is true there could be real benefits to companies who encourage workers to take a short nap during the work day.

"Sleep not only rights the wrong of prolonged wakefulness, but at a neurocognitive level, it moves you beyond where you were before you took a nap," said lead researcher Dr Matthew Walker, from the University of California at Berkeley.
If you see a student dozing in the library or a co-worker catching 40 winks in her cubicle, don't roll your eyes. New research from the University of California, Berkeley, shows that an hour's nap can dramatically boost and restore your brain power. Indeed, the findings suggest that a biphasic sleep schedule not only refreshes the mind, but can make you smarter.
Volunteers who slept for 90 minutes during the day did better at cognitive tests than those who were kept awake.

I would say it does, I do miss the tradition off siesta in Niger.

To keep up with a long fast- paced day of work I really need a siesta time, after it I can continue with it feeling fresh as new.

I take a 15-20 minute snooze after lunch every chance i get - 3 or 4 times a week. I don't know if i get any more work done, but i sure feel better.

Some companies (not many) have dedicated nap areas...
