NP Rank:
Attack ad targets hot dogs as cancer risk
The American Cancer Society is distancing itself from a television spot linking hot dog consumption to cancer. The ad itself implies that the tubular junk-food will cause cancer in children, which has not been proved by any research.
The ad vilifies one of America's most beloved, if maligned, foods, while stoking fears about a dreaded disease.
The boy doesn't have cancer. Neither do two other kids in the ad who claim to be afflicted.
The commercial's pro-vegetarian sponsors say the connection is based on studies of adults, not children, and the increased risk is slight, even if you ate a hot dog every day. While compelling, it isn't conclusive.
The bottom line from several nutritionists familiar with the ad is this: hot dogs aren't exactly a health food, but eating one every now and then probably won't hurt you.
"My concern about this campaign is it's giving the indication that the occasional hot dog in the school lunch is going to increase cancer risk," said Colleen Doyle, the American Cancer Society's nutrition director. "An occasional hot dog isn't going to increase that risk."

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff.
My opinion of the beloved hotdog changed very much for the worse when I read a technical article once long ago which stated that researchers who were trying to understand how to improve landfill management techniques found buried deep down in landfills hotdogs which were 30 years old and still in an undecayed state ...
Yikes !!!

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff. An occasional hot dog sure has the risk of making American kids even more overweight, aggravating the obesity problem that is huge in the US (no pun intended).

Most American hot dogs are so packed with toxic chemicals and hormones, they could probably do a dance on their own. Eat only sausages made with all-natural ingrediants.

I thought I had heard somewhere that hot dog consumption (and sausage) was down in Germany due to health associated issues.

"he commercial's pro-vegetarian sponsors" -- I think that's funny, since the photo I took was of a vegetarian hotdog.

If we keep this up, soon we won't be able to eat, drink and breath any longer. Is that not deadly as well?

Hot dog at Susie's in Chicago. My first Chicago-style hot dog. If it gives me cancer, I have to say it was worth it.
