GlaxoSmithKline Avandia Diabetes Drug, FDA Imposes New Restrictions To Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

The Food And Drug Administration says Avandia can stay on the market in the USA but it outlined new restrictions.


The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that the diabetes drug Avandia will be restricted to patients with Type 2 diabetes whose condition cannot be controlled with other medications.

Avanida came under FDA review after it was connected to risks of causing heart attacks.

Meanwhile the FDA's European equivalent, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said Avandia should be removed from the market completely. Banning Avandia from sale in Europe will require the approval of the the European Commission  (EU).
