A three month old baby boy was attacked by two of his grandmother's dogs while he was asleep in his basket at his grandmother's house. It was thought that he was asleep on lower floor of the house and although police have not said exactly how the baby was killed, it is believed at this point that he was attacked by his grandmother's Staffordshire Bull terrier and Jack Russell.

Neighbours dragged the dogs off the baby who was bleeding heavily and was rushed to hospital, but died later. Both dogs have been destroyed.

The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday morning in the town of Ystrad Mynach, 12 miles north of Cardiff. The child was taken Prince Charles hospital in Merthyr Tydfil where he was later pronounced dead.

The grandmother was also taken to hospital where she was treated for shock but was later released. Police confirmed that they intend to question the grandmother.

that is everyone's worst nightmare, family pets killing a infant. I didnt know Jack Russells were dangerous, maybe the bull terrier.

Ruefully I recommend this.......Pit Bulls are a pretty hot American topic since there have been many near-death victims, adult and kids. I would never ever be at ease if my neighbor had a pet like this.

Thanks for the report, Amy.  I am sorry for the family for the loss of  a precious son and his grandma's doggies.

Pets are so special.  I love them.  However, they cause many problems.  Did you know that schizophrenia has been tied to expectant mothers and infants being exposed to cat litter?  The unborn or newly born babies can be stricken later in life from the germ in cat waste.  There are other diseases that people can get from their pets, as well.

Dog attacks like this one constitute another example of risk tied to pet ownership.  Our dog, Shaggy Dog, bit a child once.  He was on a stake in the front yard, and she came into our yard and was teasing him mercilessly.  Shaggy Dog was a cocker spaniel mixed with Lhasa Apso.  Beautiful, long, black, wavy hair, with a white ring around the neck and white paws.  Shag was not a big, vicious dog, but he got us in trouble, nonetheless!  The police took him to the pound for an observation period although Shaggy Dog had all his shots.  The policeman said I could not prove that the vaccination papers belonged to that particular dog, so off to jail Shag went!  It was a glorious day at our house when Shag got sprung from the slammer!

So, even if one has a small, gentle dog, it is important to be very careful of children around pets.  There is probably some risk involved in all pet ownership.

Blessings!

Mary

What a tragic story Amy. Unfortunately, it cannot be said to be rare.

Having small children and dogs in the house at the same time carries risks, period. Zero risk does not exist. What those dogs did  (I read details of the baby's injuries in the Guardian) can be done in literally five seconds in the case of a baby and a big dog such as a rottweiler...

No-one is going to persuade me that they never leave small children alone with their dogs for those five seconds. It takes longer than that just to go to go and open the front door to welcome the neighbour in for coffee....

just a couple of questions, 1. jack russells are a working breed and need to be well exercised as do staffs, as it says in the report that she was a grandmother ( ie, no disrespect, but was she able to give her two dogs enough exersise and stimulation on a daily basis.), 2. I think it is important to know weither she has raised them from puppies or she acuired them later on in their lives, as this could open up questions on weither she was the right owner for these breeds, depending on her age and previous dog handling experiance.
