Tan Kim Hor, 84, has severe dementia, a brain disease common to the old. Kim Hor’s adopted son visits her regularly, but her mind is fixated on her parents, whom she talks about all the time. “My father and mother promised to come and see me but I don’t know where they are,” she says in Hokkien repeatedly throughout the day. “But they will come soon I think.”
