Beetroot Juice Boosts Stamina
Beetroot juice has been found to boost physical stamica and endurance during exercise up to 16%. The juice was found to increase endurance by reducing oxygen uptake, making exercise less tiring. Even regular training did not lead to similar results as drinking beet juice before exercising.
The beet juice research was conducted on healthy men, who were given a half liter of beet juice for six consecutive days. The men were then asked to complete a series of tests on an exercise bike. All the men were able to bike longer after having consumed beetroot juice. The results were published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Researchers believe that the nitrate in the beet juice turns into nitric oxide in the body, which in turn reduces the burning of oxygen. Beet juice has previously been shown to lower blood pressure.
"We were amazed by the effects of beetroot juice on oxygen uptake because these effects cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training. I am sure professional and amateur athletes will be interested in the results of this research."
