Besse Cooper: World's Oldest Person Turns 115
Besse Cooper Celebrates 115th Birthday
Besse Cooper of Monroe, Georgia, is celebrating her 115th birthday on August 26. Cooper is the world's oldest person for the second year in a row. She's only 35 years younger than the city of Vancouver, actually.
Besse Cooper is in good health for a 115-year-old, though she sleeps a lot. According to her family, she doesn't always remember that she's the oldest person in the world. Born in 1896, Cooper has seen some drastic changes in the world, to say the very least. She is the 26th person to have reached the age of 115.
There are currently 85 people in the world who are certified as supercentenarians (over the age of 110). Almost all of them are women. The average life expectancy in the United States is 79 years.
This year’s celebration will be low key compared to last year’s birthday party that featured an Elvis impersonator.
