MUNICH (Reuters) - Young men who die suddenly after being arrested by the police may be victims of a new syndrome similar to one that kills some wild animals when they are captured, Spanish researchers said on Tuesday.
Manuel Martinez Selles of Madrid's Hospital Gregorio Maranon reached the conclusion after investigating 60 cases of sudden unexplained deaths in Spain following police detention.
In one third of the cases, death occurred at the point of arrest, while in the remainder death was within 24 hours . . . (see link for full article)

Folks need to be aware that everyone tasered was someone's friend, brother, sister, neighbor, and a fellow human being. These were people who had laundry to pick up, maybe a pet waiting at home for dinner, an appointment with their dentists, and certainly a God who loved them.
Did you know they are even Tasering animals to death now?

Even children and our elderly citizens are not exempt.

It is recommended that if you want to see the above videos, do not procrastinate. Sometimes, such videos become unavailable, possibly in settling lawsuits. An elderly wheelchair-bound woman was allegedly Tasered to death by two police officers. Unfortunately, the video was removed from YouTube, but you can still see a picture of the deceased and read the comments of public outrage at this link:

Duo, I like this story. It's good stuff, in anticipation of tag discussed.

Thanks, Karen. I hope this Spanish ailment is contained before it makes it to America! Folks arrested around here already have enough problems staying alive and well until their court dates ("innocent until proven guilty" notwithstanding).

The first case of this I ever heard of was back in the mid-70's when I lived a while in Philadelphia. During the summer I was there, the papers reported a couple cases of 'sudden death after arrest' as well ...
Of course, this was long before Tazers had reached the hands of the civilian police, and the autopsies revealed the two people mentioned above had died from 38-caliber police-special puncture wounds while handcuffed behind their backs ...
Anyway, sounds like a different virus than the spanish one mentioned in your article, but you never know ...

Thanks so much for the flag and comments. Then the strange ailment may have originated here in the U.S., if your account is accurate. In any case, it is a real dangerous syndrome! The news report stated that 60 Spaniards have already met an untimely end from having contracted it. I think the CDC needs to act immediately to make sure that this outbreak is contained in Europe. This new strain must be eradicated at the source in Spain, because it will be dangerous for too many folks if allowed to spread. I wonder if there is a vaccine available? We should probably inoculate all the minority youths and mental patients right away, and everyone who has a propensity to participate in demonstrations for social change.

Thanks, Paschen!
I was just thinking that the threat of death from this new syndrome may also endanger folks incarcerated in jail cells nearest to the infected victim. The syndrome might attack them through their eyes. Then, those nearby detainees would also perish from Sudden Death After Arrest, no matter how long they may have been incarcerated.

Thanks, Resonant Earth. At least for now, folks still think it necessary to come up with scientific names to excuse cruelty. I find that somewhat reassuring. During Hitler's regime, such "niceties" were dispensed with altogether.

Good stuff and interesting. Why have they decided to not state death by Taser, even though Amnesty International have said a number of people in the US have died by this means and also in the UK?

Hello, Beaulieu. Thanks for the flag.
Taser companies market their product very successfully as a "non-lethal" device. In Florida and other places, it has even been declared by courts as acceptable for police to use Tasers to "control" children. A couple of dads have even been arrested for tasering their own kids. Profits from Taser sales are very high, and many investors are happy campers about that.
Each year, however, many people are dying and suffering permanent injuries from having been Tasered by law enforcement. This results in a good many lawsuits against Taser manufacturers and police departments across the country. Naturally, such legal action is damaging to the image of Tasers being "non-lethal." Negative press has resulted in a public outcry against Taser use. There are petitions calling for their immediate discontinuation. Humanitarians are concerned about the deaths and injuries to citizens, and generally, taxpayers are concerned about the cost to settle wrongful death lawsuits.
When judges issue orders to medical examiners making them remove references to "death by Taser" from autopsy reports, Taser manufacturers can keep selling their deadly devices as being "non-lethal" and municipalities can dodge financial accountability for wrongful deaths of citizens Tasered to death by police. With a new "syndrome" to explain such deaths, everybody wins except the dead citizens who were "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" and their families who are left to grieve. Unless the families have the means to ascertain independent autopsy reports for loved ones killed in this manner (by this new "syndrome"), they may find it hard to recover damages for such wrongful deaths.

Taser International's Product Warnings page explains more about the new "syndrome" at this link, an excerpt of which is below:
http://www.taser.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/Controlled%20Documents/Warnings/LG-INST-CTZWARN-001%20REV%20E%20Citizen%20Warnings.pdf
"Signs of Sudden In-Custody Death Syndrome include: extreme agitation, bizarre behavior, inappropriate nudity, imperviousness to pain, paranoia, exhaustive exertion, “superhuman” strength, hallucinations, sweating profusely, etc.
Sudden in-custody death results from a complex set of physiological and psychological conditions characterized by irrational behavior, extreme exertion, and potentially fatal changes in blood chemistry. Promptly capturing, controlling, and restraining a subject exhibiting signs of these conditions may end the struggle and allow early medical care intervention."
NOTICE that "Sudden in-custody death" does NOT result from being Tasered to death, according to this precautionary statement.
I was informed that during the ongoing RNC event, a protester was tasered several times. She reported the following: "Apparently there is a new device that discharges wires, copper or something into the victim. This man had lacerations around his body, and these wires had to be removed from him. This is torture and must be stopped."
She may have been describing the new device at this link: http://www.guardian-self-defense.com/taserc2.htm

duo, I like this story. It's good stuff.
This happened to my roomate in the army. A quiet small man who was on the boxing team. A young man with more rage than was good for him. One night he was arrested while drunk at the EM (enlisted men's) club. Later than night he was declared dead. The MP's tried blaming it on his drug use - but the problem was he didn't use drugs, ever, and none were found in his system.

Louis... a featherweight boxer. Young, angry, but not mean. He was killed in 1983.
at 06:48 on September 9th, 2008
Hello, Mikasi. I am sorry about Louis. I know how his family and friends feel.
To get constant updates on who died from being Tasered lately (or caught the "Syndrome"), here is a link to a group that broadcasts this information: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NO_TASER/
According to information at this site, Andy Tran, an Los Angeles mentally ill man, is the latest victim. He was apparently climbing into a window to his own home when he was "caught in the act" and Tasered to death by police. The report states in part:
"Police said Andy Tran, 32, was shot in the thigh on Wednesday when police were attempting to detain him. The victim, a mentally ill man, was pronounced dead at a hospital later."
So Louis and Andy, like hundreds of others, joined the body count that keeps on growing.
I am deeply sorry if Louis was someone close to you, and even if he was not.

I updated the story with some very graphic videos that illustrate how some people probably catch the "Sudden Death After Arrest" Syndrome. Beware - graphic footage.

Encouraging support. About 35 more people have endorsed the petition to ban Tasers since the article published - people from all over the world. Some left interesting comments, also. Read them if you have a moment.
