The news that some supermarket salads sold as 'healthy lunch' packs have more fat and calories than a Big Mac will shock diet conscious workers who pop into their local supermarket for a healthy salad instead of their local fast food joint.

Salads in themselves are almost fat free but supermarket salad packs often contain very fatty sauces such as mayonnaise which rack up the calories and salt content.

This adds added fuel to the slow burning but ongoing calls for better food labeling in the UK where obesity especially amongst children and young people is a growing problem.

Some supermarket salads contain more fat and calories than a Big Mac and fries.

Those hoping to enjoy a summer salad as part of a healthy diet could be in for a shock.

Many on sale at leading stores are more unhealthy than a diet of fast food and chocolate, research by Which? found.

The consumer group says its findings emphasise the need for clearer nutrition labelling on food packaging.

While a Big Mac and medium fries will provide you with 820 calories and 40g of fat, the Smedleys Atlantic prawn marie rose salad, from Morrisons, contains 855 calories and 66.3g of fat.

That is interesting. Should help McDo sale some more Big Mac. The question remains whether it is more healthy though. Fat does not always mean bad and lean may mean unhealthy, depending on what else is in there.
