Bill Clinton and Bill Gates Urge More Spending On Global Health Initiative
The two Bill's teamed up in Washington Wednesday, Bill Clinton and Bill Gates testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on global health both urging that the Obama administration should spend more on global health issues.
Former President Bill Clinton and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates agree that the United States needs to be more visible when it comes to spending on global health. Issues such as AIDS prevention, malaria, dysentery and other diseases plaguing many parts of the developing world need the urgent attention from the United States.
President Bill Clinton who now heads the Clinton Foundation which is active in global health said spending on international health is not only the right thing to do but the smart thing to do
When people think you care whether their kids live or die, they like you pretty well, and they cut you a lot of slack," Clinton said. "You can disagree with them on a lot of things because they know you care whether their kids live or die. This is not complicated
Bill Gates is actively involved in global health issues through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced that it will spend $10 billion over the next 10 years on vaccinating the children of the world. Sen Dick Luger noted that both the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Clinton Foundation are in many cases more visible representations of the USA than the US government itself.
Gates said that even though foundations are spending billions and billions it is simply not enough
Our resources are but a drop in the bucket compared to what’s needed,” Gates said today in written testimony. “The U.S. government is a critical partner in the mission.
Currently, President Obama has slotted $9.7 billion for spending on global health in the 2011 budget both Bill Gates and Bill Clinton would like to see that number increase.
