Bill Gates Donates To Malaria Research Using Gum And Chocolate

Microsoft's Bill Gates has distributed grants of $100,000 to aid 76 research projects for world problems such as malaria. One of the new projects for malaria research uses both gum and chocolate to detect the disease. UCLA doctorial candidate Andrew Fung proposed the new form of research and Gates money will be used to develop his test.
The advantage of using chewing gum for malaria research is that no blood needs to be drawn as malaria indications are detected in saliva instead. The disadvantage, however, is that blood indicators are more reliable than in saliva.
Saliva is easy to collect using gum, the process is painless and the test doesn't require a battery or computer to run. Tests would mainly be carried out on children.
Gates' donation to malaria research will also aid Steven Maranz and his testing on how chocolate affects the malaria parasite. Chocolate's ability to bind with cholesterol and remove it from circulation could leave the malaria parasite starved.
Mr Maranz wants to kill some of the parasites but leave enough in the blood to help children develop a lifetime resistance to malaria He will be looking at several different compounds but he thinks chocolate is the best candidate because it is rich in the right elements and is known to be safe.
These are just two of the projects that "The Bill & Melina Gates Foundation" will donate to as part of their Grand Challenges Exploration program.

The Gates Foundation is at the forefront in many areas including HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis prevention and treatment. The are the model for philanthropic organizations.
