Binge drinking is more common among middle-aged people in the United States than previously thought, according to a study by the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Researchers studied 11,000 american adults, and found that a quarter of men and a tenth of women between 50 and 64 had drank five or more portions of alcohol in one day within the past month. 14% of men and 4% of women had binged on alcohol within the same time period.

Male binge drinkers tended to be single and have a higher income than non-drinkers, while women binge drinkers reported a higher use of prescription drugs.

Four drinks per day for men and two for women is considered a safe amount of alcohol consumption.
