Female Facebook users world-wide picked up on a trend yesterday that involved a user changing their Facebook status to simply describe their bra colour. The point of the online campaign was to raise breast cancer awareness, although the thousands of status updates with one word colours simply seemed to confuse many users.

Those who didn't understand the trending status changes seemed to look to Google and other online sources for information. By typing in their question as to why so many female Facebook users were changing their statuses to colours, they could pretty easily discover that the status updates were simply aimed at raising breast cancer awareness.

In the recent reports from various news sources, this was only started by a lady from Detroit who is trying to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. The what-color-is-you-bra Facebook phenomenon began when a viral chain letter was sent addressing to every woman with active Facebook profiles.

By Thursday night, 'bra colour Facebook status' was already trending on Google. The most popular colours throughout the day yesterday were black, white, and beige. While the original chain letter only requested a colour to be designated in the Facebook status, users soon got creative with various in depth descriptions of the bras they were wearing.

The breast cancer awareness chain was reportedly started by a Detroit woman who began a small chain letter to pass on with the idea for posting an individual's bra colour. It seems that Facebook became the best platform for the campaign, and users are continuing to make bra colour status updates as of today.

But...theres been two new ones since!  One with how you're wearing your hair (eg: on top!) ...and most recently what size your FOOT is! (eg 7 inches) lol  The suggested answers are supposed to confuse the men even MORE  :D

But... how did it RAISE awareness for breast cancer... all it did was tell people the color of the bra. WTF?

Dear Snowchild, It absolutely raised awareness. The proof is on this very page that you read and posted this statement on. The plain fact is people are talking about it. It also got attention from the Susan G. Komen foundation. So I think you cannot deny the fact that it did raise awareness. It got your attention, didn't it.

When people found out, that this campaign should raise breast cancer awareness. Many people used google to find out more about breast cancer:

See Google Trends: www.google.de/trends?q=facebook+color%2C+breast+cancer&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

Creative? How is this creative? It does not take a genious to use a facebook status to apparently 'raise awareness' and how is it even doing that when everyone is confused? Clearly I think it is silly altogether, my mom has breast cancer and many of us know someone who is effected by it, so why do we need to raise so much more awareness? Why not put more efforts towards raising funds for how to treat and prevent it, rather than pay people to come up with these stupid ideas?!

Your family may have been talking about it, and putting money towards breast cancer research but many people have not.  I have had thyroid cancer at the age of 22 after having my first baby and wish that everyone would look out for enlarged goiters...but originally it took me 6 months to go see a doctor because I thought it was just fat I hadn't lost after having the baby.  I had not done a selfbreast exam in awhile...but after the chain mail did a self check even though I have already had a full body scan this year.  Breast cancer awareness is just being "aware"  and that means doing what the cancer societies are asking us to do.  Take a couple minutes or finally get around to getting mammograms if your someone that always puts it off.  Plus so many charities use our money to make us aware...I think this was a really good cheap way to spread the word :)

LeahLynn.. I am sorry to hear your mother has breast cancer, my grandmother had it as well and lost her right breast to it. She like so many woman back then really didnt know much about it and didnt know the signs to look for. Today there are alot of sites to go to and look up what breast cancer is and what to look for. The internet gives us lots of information on breast cancer and as we have seen here alot of people did what we had hope to do. Anyone who was confused asked questions and got answers and then some even searched the internet to find out more about it. There for we made more woman aware of a serious desease that so many really dont know much about. I did join in on this and it was out of memory of my grandmother and the hope that more woman would as well and maybe search and read up on breast cancer. You say we should have put more effort towards raising funds for the research of breast cancer? Well I think we did just that, this could have made even men more aware as well and helpful to the woman and it may have just caused some people to make a donation by reading up on it. I hope this helped to make you feel just a little better. This was intended as a step toward making more people aware of  breast cancer and we succeeded. I will continue to post colors for a long time yet

All I can say is WTG Janet Saffron. I don't care what others think of your venture to raise awareness of breast cancer, after all, what is Movember about, not really the mo at all. Just a way to get it out there. Well Done Jan, keep up the great work!

I do believe that Janet Saffron started this campaign to raise awareness for Breast cancer. The author of this article, while having well written (and it IS great publicity for Breast Cancer Awareness) needs to check her facts before attributing credit.

As for you naysayers, I never bothered to do self-examinations until I saw campaigns such as this one. Instead of wasting energy ragging about whether it is or is not effective or creative, if you think you got a better idea than by all means, tell us! We'd love to hear it.

We all have a tendency to NOT think about cancer until it hits close to home. Then it's all we will EVER hear or think about. Cancer affects you strongly, you become aware of your own life and how you might have been wasting it. And the people who love you become aware of how close they are to losing you.

But there are many, many more people out there who haven't had cancer touch so close to their lives. Campaigns such as this is just one way of many to raise awareness, get people to think about it and DO something before it's too late. I wish I had seen a campaign such as this before it became too late!

Way to go Janet and those of you who participated!

I am the partner of Janet Saffron and I know that she started the bra color on thursday 07/01/2010 for Breast Cancer Awareness, It has gone way beyond belief. There are always people out there that try to claim they did something without lifting a finger, why can't these people get off there fat lazy arses and do something for themselves. To take credit for someone else work is lower than low, Good work Janet and I will support you on this 100%, Janet has now started a Jocks and Knickers color for Prostate & Cervical Cancer and the Bra color is still going strong. Janet has spent hours and hours day and night on this venture for the Awearness since it started last Thursday Love you Darl Kevin

As one of the people who saw the colors but was not aware of it's meaning, I think it was extremely effective. As soon as I found out, I posted my color. I received numerous comments asking what was it about which means that I got the opportunity to share and educate. My grandmother died from breast cancer and my best friend is a breast cancer survivor. Anything that can be done to increase awareness which leads to saving lives is a good idea. I am somewhat surprised by the negative comments because I had not heard any until I read those that are posted on this site. I was so excited when a friend shared that it had made the news because now even more people are aware and asking questions. Questions that will hopefully lead to answers and then ultimately cures. With so many sill games moving in anout of the social network sites, isn't it wonderful that such a simple game could lead to more people talking about something that kills millions of women and men each year?

I honestly believe Janet did start the bra colors campaign, I added her as a friend yesterday,  and it was posted on Jan 6, 2010 her first color according to her page!! I also believe with so many silly games moving about on the social network sites, isn't it wonderful that such a simple game could lead to more people talking about something that kills millions of women and men each year? I am going to do everything I can to help support her and I'd like to take this further then either of us could imagine it could ever go!!! We all have a tendency to NOT think about cancer until it hits close to home. Then it's all we will EVER hear or think about. Cancer affects you strongly, you become aware of your own life and how you might have been wasting it. And the people who love you or a family member become aware of how close they are to losing you or someone they love. Men & women need to check monthly, get to know your body and if you notice something different go get checked.!!! I'm the biggest baby about DR's , but I found a lump close to my rib cage and put it off way to long, I hopefully will know soon what it is. I'm hoping a cyst or something simple, I know it's not breast cancer, because breast cancer the lumps are hard and they don't move!! I know this because I have a really great friend  Dawn who battled breast cancer last yr and another friend of mine who's Mom overcame breast cancer quite a few years back. I will say for the people who find it silly or lame I hope you never have to go through finding out you, or someone you love have some form of cancer, you just might think back to this moment, it won't be lame or silly then will it!! Janet I'm with you all the way on this & will support you any way I can, I want to help youy for my Children and grandchildren!!! May God Bless us all!!  Kuddo's to Janet and everyone who posted their bra color on Thursday Jan 7, 2010!! <3
