Britain's chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson is warning of a surge of tens of thousands of H1N1 flu cases each week.

He warned that the most likely scenario would be a surge of swine flu cases from current levels. At least 3,500 cases have been confirmed so far, with the larger surges expected over 'flu season' in the autumn and winter.

Over 3,500 cases have been confirmed so far, and the government has already paved the way for some areas to move away from trying to contain the virus.

Scotland, London and the West Midlands have been identified as the areas with the most rapid spread.
