Canada themed plates sold in Dollar type stores across Canada have been made the subject of a recall because they contain excessive lead and cadmium in the glaze.  The plates are safe as decorative plates, but food placed on them may leach out the toxic metals and expose the food to its poisonous effects.  A full product description follows.

This recall involves decorative glazed plates with a Canada theme by Glazers Inc. The recalled glazed plates are white with one of the following 3 designs on it:
  • Canadian flag
  • Red maple leaf with the word "CANADA" printed across it; or
  • 2 Canadian flags with the word "CANADA" printed underneath.

The plate is approximately 20.3cm (8 inches) in diameter. The recalled plates have a removable sticker on the back, with UPC 060096481701.

Hazard:  Both lead and cadmium are poisonous to humans.  They are especially dangerous heavy metals for children to be exposed to.  Any dishes used for food must be free of these toxic substances.

Fix:  Health Canada advises people to throw the dishes into the garbage.  You might wish to return them to the store where you bought them.  You might wish to contact the distributor at  Glazers Inc. at 1-888-233-1968.

Number sold in Canada:  approx. 5 000
