While our recent focus has been on the Listeria contamination of meats and China's milk scandal, we now have a recall of flour.  The Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) has issued a recall notice for no-name all purpose flour.  This flour has been distributed in Ontario.  Some people have been sickened by the flour and consumers are advised not to use the flour or eat any products made from it.  The following is an excerpt from the CFIA  site.

OTTAWA, October 10, 2008 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume no name brand all-purpose flour because the product may contain excessively high levels of folic acid, iron, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine.

The affected product, no name brand all-purpose flour, is sold in 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) bags bearing lot codes beginning with 125J and UPC 0 60383 01375 2.

This product has only been distributed in Ontario to the following stores: No Frills, Cash and Carry, Freshmart, Fortinos, Zehrs, Real Canadian Superstore and Loblaws. If the lot code is not evident, consumers are advised to check with their retailer to determine if they have the affected product.

There have been 4 reported reactions associated with the consumption of this product.

The flour has a normal light beige colour when dry, but may turn yellow-orange when mixed with water. Based on normal levels of consumption for products made from this flour (such as bread), symptoms of flushing of the skin (red colour, warm feeling and/or itching), as well as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea could be experienced from the iron and niacin. Consumers are advised not to consume the flour or any products made with the flour, regardless of the quantity used. Consumers are advised to consult their physician if they have medical concerns.

No, I think it's the smaller bag - not the bigger one that you have.

What is the range of the lot codes involved, I have a bag with the lot code 25J on it; is it safe?

Correction to my earlier email on 08:16 October 12, 2008, the lot code I have is 205J, is it part of the recall?

Barbara McPherson, I like this story. It's good stuff. When you think about all the things that flour is used to make, this is potentially quite scary.

Barbara McPherson, I like this story. It's good stuff.
Thanks...

The so called integrity, quality, & safety practiced by these inspectors ..
are frightful..
What's worst?
We have to rely on them.
Peace,
