Smoking a joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer risk, scientists in New Zealand have found, as they warned of an "epidemic" of lung cancers linked to cannabis.

Studies in the past have demonstrated that cannabis can cause cancer, but few have established a strong link between cannabis use and the actual incidence of lung cancer.

In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal, the scientists said cannabis could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco as its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes.

We always wondered how cannabis users could claim that there was no risk of cancer from inhaling cannabis smoke.  It's not the case, however, that everyone who smokes will develop cancer.  Smoking does heighten the risk.

Cancers are abnormal growths within the body that compete with healthy cells for nutrients and eventually disrupt body function to the point of death. Cancers are made up of cells that have lost the capacity to regulate cell division through mutation.  These mutated cells multiply without restraint and overtake healthy cells, impeding normal body function.  Exposure to smoke may bring mutation and subsequently, cancer.  Whether an individual develops cancer depends on his cells' response to mutagens and his body's response to the unwanted growths resulting from mutation.

What does seem clear is that any sort of smoking increases the risk of cancer and of lung and heart disease.  While we view smoking as a matter of personal choice, it seems to be rather an unwise choice.  We recommend cannabis enthusiasts ingest their chosen intoxicant.  The effect is not as immediate but the breathing is easier.

Good stuff?

Give journalism a try.

Check your facts and question a "new" study with existing information that dismisses the new "claims" before publishing more reefer madness.

There is NO documented evidence of cannabis or THC causing cancer - in fact, the opposite has been PROVEN.

THC reduces and eliminates tumours in the body. http://www.nature.com/onc/journal/v27/n3/abs/1210641a.html http://www.nature.com/bjc/journal/v95/n2/abs/6603236a.html

Cannabis has been smoked for hundreds of years, and the quality has only improved - why would an epidemic be on the horizon?

Use a little common sense - please.
