Case Study of Hypnosis and Headaches...

Headache and Migraine Headache and Migraine

Joan, aged 38 was a secretary in a local hospital, who had regularly experienced headaches and severe tension. The frequency of her headaches was on average 2 to 3 times a week which she sort of was able to deal with until she started waking up with them throughout the night more and more. The painkillers she had did work at first but she soon started to become immune to them and after taking them in the morning she soon discovered that by luch time the tension and headache had returned. The headaches manifested themselves as pressure around the orbital regions of her eyes and tension in her head  and neck. To add to this she was stressed even more due to the excessive deadlines from work and NHS targets.

Joan went to a recommended hypnotherapist and had 4 sessions of therapy. Her first session started with a progressive relaxation induction, focusing on muscular relaxation where she was asked to imagine and visualise a hypnotic blue colour which moved from the tip of her head all the way down to the tip of her toes sending each and every muscle in to a deep still, relaxed state. When Joan was in a deep state of hypnosis, she imagined herself walking in a beautiful, green, sunlit, forest to ensure that she had achieved a dissociated daydreaning state that helped Joan feel so mentally calm.

When she was familiar with achieving a state of hypnosis, Joan was given suggestions that she would feel more physically relaxed and mentally calm at work with each and every task and experience she had and did. Joan continued to control her headaches with self-hynosis with various techniques that helped lessen the pain..

After Joan's 4 sessions of hypnotherapy she was able to master the art of self-hypnosis to the point where she could prevent the tension mounting in her head and neck and prevent an attack. A follow-up session three months later revealed that Joan had become a master at using self-hypnosis and further to this her headaches had become a thing of the past. In addition as her headaches began to clear, Joan's confidence began to improve and her self hypnosis encouraged and promoted mental calmness and physical relaxation on more regular basis.

FACT - Migraines and headaches are believed to be caused by changes and fluctuations to the brain's blood supply.
