Cell Phone Use Can Prevent And Reverse Alzheimer's, Says Study
A new study out of the University of South Florida showed that long-term cell phone exposure in mice tended to reduce the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers also found that cell phone use could actually reverse the debilitating disease. Researchers are not clear how the exposure to cell phones could cause such a drastic effect on Alzheimer stricken mice, but the finding opens opportunities for preventative and therapeutic treatments, which would be non-invasive and relatively cheap. It is believed that the electromagnetic radiation emitted at specific frequency by cell phones could affect the levels of toxic beta-amyloid protein causing Alzheimer. In the study, the mice exposed to the electromagnetic waves experienced a decrease in dangerous beta-amyloid levels.
But, researchers warn that the findings could be misleading and should not prompt people to use cell phones without caution. For years, there have been allegations of potential cell phone cancer-causing effects. Yet, the W.H.O. claims radiation emitted by cellular phones is unlikely to induce or promote cancers. However, many countries have recommended measures to minimize exposure. Moreover, Alzheimer's disease takes a different course in mice and humans, so extrapolating the results to include humans is premature.
But William Thies, chief medical and scientific officer of the Alzheimer's Association, said the study was "very preliminary" and warned against self-medicating by over-using a cell phone.
"No one should feel they are being protected from Alzheimer's, dementia, cognitive decline by using their cell phones based on this study," Thies said in a statement.
Alzheimer's is predicted to affect 107 million people by 2050.
