Residents of Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba should check purchased spinach.  Queen Victoria brand spinach has been recalled due to the threat of Salmonella contamination.

"The affected spinach was sold in bunches held together with a twist tie bearing the Queen Victoria logo, Product of USA, PLU 4090 and UPC 33383-65200."  Healthy Canadians

This recall in Canada is in addition to the widespread recall in the U.S.

"The voluntary recall is limited to 1,715 cartons. One thousand, five hundred fifteen of the cartons were packed in the "Queen Victoria" brand. This product was distributed to Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba, Canada. It was distributed to retail, foodservice and wholesale buyers.

Two hundred of the cartons were packed in the "Tubby" label and were distributed in California and New York to retail and wholesale customers.

The "Queen Victoria" product was packed in cardboard cartons with "Spinach" printed on the side panel, in wire bound crates or Reusable Plastic Containers. The product was harvested September 1 through September 3." U.S. Drug and Food Administration

Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria may not look or smell off. Do not take chances with this bacterium.  Vulnerable people may suffer life altering symptoms from a bout of Salmonella poisoning.

I believe any greens should be purchased locally. Specially in summer time. Most of the fresh 'organic' food is produced locally. Keep in mind that the distance a produce travels before it lays in your plate adds to the chances of being contaminated by one way or another.

Farmers market are found almost in every city. Buy local, be aware but most of all BE HEALTHY and grow your own ;)
