NP Rank:
China is America's dream
Over the last few weeks, i have got to know six people much better: Pinky, Z, Kay – and – three Americans: Christy, Kaylie, and Reagan. Christy is mom to Kaylie and Reagan. Pinky, Z, and Kay are students in China – all studying very different things (communication systems, English, and fine art, in that order).
Christy is perhaps one of the best mom's i've ever met in my life. Trust me; she's a Great mom. i'm a keen observer when required.. Trust me; she's a Great mom .. The three Chinese girls? Perhaps three of the most interesting, best students, and family devoted girls i've ever met in my life. i know this is a lot of 'ever met in my life' but.. i think there are special reasons why i'm getting to know all six right now in my life.
The old adage: surround yourself with shit; your life becomes shit; surround yourself with good people; your life becomes good; is True. Considering my lurid past, these are six of the most wonderful people to have ever 'walked into my life'. They 're-teach me' what's important in life – just by being themselves.
Z is so optimistic and giving.. i couldn't wish for a more perfect friend or daughter (if she ever graces my path). Pinky is so devoted to her studies that she rarely has time to chat with me.. And Kay, words fail when i try to describe her.. She's an unbelievably sensitive artist.. She reminds me there's a thing called 'Seeing' (done as an artist) where perhaps only an artist can understand what i'm trying to say..
i'm not easily awed being middle-aged and jaded by too many sickening life-experiences.. But those same experiences help put things in perspective and help me treasure things worth cherishing now: those six friendships. :)
Unfortunately for America, China is 'where we want to be' right now. China's focus on education and family values will make them world leader (in terms of culture and leading by example) for many decades to come. Speaking with Z today, she's 'sure' the three are 'normal' girls in China.. But they are anything but normal to me (and i think – to most Americans if they put in the time to get to know them). These three Chinese girls are the 'ideal students and daughters' any American would be proud to simply know.
Sure, we have the wonderful mom Christy and her two amazing daughters Kaylie and Reagan as 'prime examples' of successful Americans.. But they don't represent us – no matter how much we might wish they do. America is rife with divorce, broken families, and broken dreams.. The 'funny' thing is: Chinese admire us as a 'great country' (as proclaimed by Z today).. How sad that what she thinks about America is probably only true about China. America has lost its way.. We have become a nation floundering in 'growth as an economic solution to all problems', broken families, and again – broken dreams..
Perhaps the best thing i can do is: study Chinese language and culture – and – move to China. ;) ..Maybe if i go first, maybe that might inspire Kaylie or Reagan to go see – what America could be like IF we cared .. IF we tried..

I was in China last year, I was bitterly disappointed.
It was boring.
you cant judge an entire nation on a handful of people.

Hello,Faithless Templar, excuse me,I wanna to ask one question for u ,how can we judge all nation only on a handful of people? If one ppl did something wrong, then we can say she or he is a bad person?Maybe not,I think you know that all ppl will make mistakes, even u,big or not, that just mistakes. They can have a new life even if they made mistakes.

Hello Leia, I clearly stated you cannot judge an entire country by a handful of people. It does not matter if those people are very good or very bad they still do not represent the entire nation. I met many nice people in China. I still thought living there was boring.

China and America really shouldn't be intimately compared..To totally different cultures and life styles..Ultimately you could say everyone is the same or everyone is different..The choice is yours..

they have a fixed yuan; we have a floating dollar. we owe them enormous debt; they are (as far as i know) solvent. they have 1000s of years of national history; we are a 'baby country' by comparison. we have dismantled our space program; they promise to go to the moon. they value respect; we value things. regardless of their social revolution, they have Integrity; we have a fake smile and pat on the back.. SURE we're totally Different. but that does not mean we cannot compare.. the basic difference between America and China? our materialism and their (dare i say it?) spiritualism. contrary to our anti-red campaign, their brand of socialism does not equal spiritual death. and they WILL out-do us in the long run if only for their 'national values' of education, respect, and family.. contrary to the nay-sayers, there is a thing in statistics (remember i'm a stats major) called indicator random variables. these relate to indicator statistics and representative samples.. i daresay the three ladies mentioned above ARE representative of Chinese youth. my point above (which no one got) is that even if Kaylie and Reagan are representative of American youth, China will still out-perform America because the Chinese are inherently more: disciplined, cooperative, mutually genuinely respectful,.. where does the list end?

Sorry sam but you are jumping the gun. China is indeed a rising nation with many advantages and a great work ethic (depending entirely on perspective but it seems we are in agreement on this). They are just as materialistic as anybody else however. This respect you speak of is dependant upon it. The richer someone is the more respect they (feel they)are entitled to. Their 'spiritualism'? a bit of an odd thing to say about modern china. Its true that china has a long and impressive history, however the majority of my students felt that present day china paid its own history and culture little heed.
By the way , saying "where does the list end?" is a bit much when you mentioned only three things, at least one of them debatable. They are certainly not more polite than the average American, I can tell you that much.
