China Protests Milk Import Bans at WTO Meeting More Milk Scandal

With another recall in the melamine contaminated milk scandal coming today, one that found unacceptable levels of melamine in chocolate candies, you would think that the Chinese officials would be offering abject apologies for endangering people's health around the world.  This latest news that they are trying to spin the deliberate, institutionalized contamination of their milk supply as accidental is outrageous.

GENEVA: China used a World Trade Organization meeting Thursday to criticize countries that have banned Chinese milk since the discovery that some of the country's dairy products were laced with the industrial chemical melamine.

Chinese officials said milk powder and other dairy products that were found to contain melamine were accidentally contaminated, contradicting a WHO claim that the chemical was added deliberately.

Last year melamine was the contributing factor in the deaths of hundreds of pet dogs and cats.  China is developing a very poor record in consumer safety.

Yeah, let's feel sorry for the Chinese government for lax regulations...right...I feel bad for the farmers who have done nothing wrong and suffered as a result of this, but what are consumers to do?  As more and more recalls come each day, one can't help but be overly cautious and rule out all Chinese dairy products until the situation settles and we get some answers.

I would never buy milk products from any place more than 1 hour from my home.

Works when you live where we live - but in China one of the hardest hit provinces, Hebei, is the very same province Sanlu Dairy operated out of.  Those affected were buying "locally" as well.

And that makes sense but why would Americans buy Chinese milk products?  That seems plain dumb to me.

True - though the only issues/recalls in America and Canada so far have been candies/sweets and Mr. Coffee, no straight up milk or formula.

There's an ongoing list of recalled products, which contains very few items that made their way into North America.
