The common belief is that Chinese food contains MSG and is bad for the heart but a recent study shows otherwise.

A clinical study on patients who have suffered a heart attack found that a partially purified extract of Chinese red yeast rice, Xuezhikang (XZK), reduced the risk of repeat heart attacks by 45%, revascularization (bypass surgery/angioplasty), cardiovascular mortality and total mortality by one-third and cancer mortality by two-thirds.

The multicenter, randomized, double-blind study, was conducted on almost 5,000 patients, ranging in age from 18-70 over a five-year period at over 60 hospitals in the People's Republic of China. Study participants were given two-300-milligram XZK capsules or a placebo and tracked over a five-year period. The XZK capsules contained a combination of lovastatin, lovastatin hydroxyl acid, ergosterol and other components.

Corresponding author David M. Capuzzi, M.D., Ph.D, director of the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program at Jefferson's Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine and Zonliang Lu, M.D., Ph.D, from the Fuwai Hospital at the Chinese Academy of Medical Science report their findings in the June 15th edition of the American Journal of Cardiology. "It's very exciting because this is a natural product and had very few adverse side effects including no abnormal blood changes," said Capuzzi.

"I think it is surprising that a natural product like XZK would have this great an effect," said Capuzzi. "If further testing and study prove true, my hope is that XZK becomes an important therapeutic agent to treat cardiovascular disorders and in the prevention of disease whether someone has had a heart attack or not. But it is important to recognize the fact we do not know exactly how Chinese red yeast rice works. The exact ingredients from the XZK capsules have not been isolated and studied yet. Still the results were so profound, even out performing statins prescribed in numerous western populations, that further study should certainly be investigated."

This dish is from Congee Village at 99 Bowery in New York City. It happens that I have to watch what I eat because I have a cholesterol problem. This dish isn't too bad for the cholesterol level and it's wonderful for the spirit because it's absolutely delicious.

I think even Chinese people are not all familiar to this food. A special dish made with rice, meatloaf & egg. It’s good to have it as breakfast.

I ate this in Qupertino, CA. This rice gruel tasted very bland , while side dishes did strong (probably contained much MSG). So I usually mix them so that I can enjoy them with well balanced taste and nutrition.

Salty Fish with Pork and Ginger

Defitney not a dish that will appeal to everyone's palate, but it's the classic comfort food in my household. It goes perfect with rice!

I enjoyed this meal in Daejeon, South Korea. This is Korean-style Chinese food. Here you can see fried dumplings, sweet and sour pork, and fried rice with a black bean paste. Always a good meal when you stop in at the local Chinese restaurants in South Korea.

Coming from a metropolitan Singapore, I am open to different variety of food. However I will still very much miss chinese food in the midst of pizzas, fast food, salad and burgers. While there is a misconception that chinese food is rare and expensive in a city like New York, I've managed to haunt down great and reasonably-priced Chinese food when I was in NY. This photo was taken in the airport- even as I am flying home, its nice to have a bite of the chinese food before I go home for the familiar taste.

This fried rice is what I call Indonesian Fried Rice. It is spicy and full of garlic, ginger and chili paste, not your standard fried rice.

Along with using very little oil, I've never used msg in any of my Asian recipes.

The dish in my photo was prepared by my father, and restaurant owner, James Lam from Boise, ID. He owns the Twin Dragon Chinese Restaurant at 2200 W. Fairview Ave. The Twin Dragon is one of the two original Chinese restaurants in the Boise area and has been around for more than thirty years.
This dish is one of my favorites that my father prepares just for me. It includes green and red bell peppers, pea pods, celery, and potatoes in what is called "Beef Tomato" sauce, on a side of steamed rice.

One comment on this article is if the Chinese restaurant you dine at does include MSG in its dishes, request for the dish without. And another tip. If you are vegetarian or vegan, request for dishes regularly made with beef or chicken broth, with water in its place.

Taken with a k800i cameraphone while eating out. I usually go for fish dishes as they are good and healthy for you. The combination of crispy rice noodles and, I believe, tilapia fish gives off a great crunch in the mouth and goes down smooth as well.

This dish, and these dishes come from a place now in transition at 6/11/08. The food has been marvelous, and we have had several 20+ parties there with food not on the menu. But the chef/owner/and real driving force (his wife) have left.

We still have Tasty China in Alpharetta to give us reliable Northern Chinese dishes. This meal was marvelous, take a look at the set.

This dish I took in a small chinese restaurant in Bangkok, however, Chinese fried rice is not difficult to cook at home. It takes only few minutes to finish withtout MSG.

I love chinese food and chinese cooking - it's one of my favorite cuisines.  With that said. One funny experience at a restaurant in China Town, Portland Oregon.  We wandered into this place hungry to try the house fried rice... the waitress was new (and did not speak english very well).  But she recommended a vegetarian option.  When asked what kinds of vegetables were going to come with the house special vegetable fried rice she replied candidly:

"SO MANY VEGGEBOW I CAN'T REMEMBOW".. and promptly walked away.

I have never had a reaction to MSG but several people I eat with have... so it's nice to see more and more restaurants popping up with NO MSG or no msg options on their menu!  Chinese food can be healthy if you order properly and request changes in oil or seasoning.  Good chinese restaurants still have CHEFS in the kitchen and are usually happy to alter the recipe to make things healthy for a patron.

This was taken in Nepal sometime during December, 2007, either in Pokhara or Lumbini. I do remember it was tasty. :-)

My first hotpot experience was at Golden Harvest in Warren. Golden Harvest is the most authentic Chinese restaurant within driving distance of my house. If I recall correctly, this dish had some really well cooked, fatty beef and lots of scallions. The sauce was rich and savory. A very delicious meal indeed!
