Christmas Cocoa Recalled Due to Melamine Risk

Three hot cocoa products have been recalled by the US FDA because they may contain harmful levels of the toxic chemical melamine, which sickened thousands of children in China earlier this year and sparked food safety concerns worldwide.

Dorsey Marketing in Quebec, Canada has also voluntarily recalled the G&J Gourmet Market Cocoa products.

The cocoa is being sold nationwide at Big Lots and Shopko stores and might contain melamine, which can cause kidneys to shut down, as well as other problems. Melamine in pet food ingredients from China also sickened and killed many dogs in the U.S. in 2007 and 2008. The toxic chemical is added to milk, wheat and other products to make them appear to contain more protein so that producers and manufacturers can pass off substandard foods for more money.

The labels at risk are: G&J Hot Cocoa Stuffer, G&J His and Hers Hot Cocoa Set and G&J Cocoa in French Vanilla and Double Chocolate flavours, as several samples have tested positive for melamine.  If you have these products, return immediately to the store where you purchased them and don't give away as Christmas presents!

Thanks for reposting this info, Terry. It needs to stay in the headlines.

Here is my original post and also the FDA news release and numbers to call if anyone should need to contact the company.
