Chuck Grassley, Medical Marijuana and "Small Government"

Democracy has its problems, but drug use is not one of them. Mind you, drug use and drug abuse are two completely different issues. Drug use is about civil liberty, and involves personal choice in the method and substance by which one deals with illness, fatigue, depression, boredom, injury, anxiety, sleeplessness, and any other circumstance which mars the joy of living.

Drug abuse, on the other hand, is a public health issue, best and most effectively dealt with by trained physicians, clergy, family, counselors and community. Guns and SWAT teams and helicopters are the implements of war, and just do not belong anywhere near it.

And, it is because of this that I find it rather astounding that Senator Charles Grassley, (R) of Iowa, a long-time proponent of small government, does not object to the crass interference into the lives of American citizens perpetrated for more than 40 years by the so called War on Drugs. Are states' rights and personal liberty only catch phrases for Grassley and his cohorts, or is true application of these principles too threatening to contemplate?

Apparently so, for Grassley recently criticized Eric Holder and the Obama administration for the decision to no longer target medical cannabis dispensaries which comply with state law.

That's right Holder, what's the matter with you? We don't want folks thinking that compliance with state law affords any protection to businesses, now, do we?

The conservatives are hypocrites here, for sure.

They "want" smaller government when it comes to business but not when it comes to how you intoxicate yourself.

Pure rubbish, their position.

But, this is opinion. You should label it "Opinion". Sometimes the "Opinion" tag doesn't pop up, so I apologize ahead of time if that is the case.

Thanks Roy, not sure where to label it. Or how to change it.

Brinna, the Opinion tag is a little tick-box that you find on either the first screen of the story creation process, or in the Edit tab of the completed story. In this case, I ticked it myself.
