There was not immediate word to explain his decision. Sources had confirmed weeks ago that Obama had offered the job to Gupta and that the neurosurgeon had intended to take it. At the time, sources said Gupta would leave his network job for the government post.

Sources said Gupta told CNN executives that he wanted to devote more time to his medical practice and to his duties at the network

CNN's Dr. Gupta = Obama Surgeon General?

CNN is reporting that the Obama administration is considering TV Neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta for the role of Surgeon General and of course CNN Golden Boy Rick Sanchez was all smiles reporting the breaking news.

The report stated that President-Elect Obama may have approched the "good" Doctor directly seeking to bring the Michigan University graduate into the new administration.

The speculation continues

Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post is also reporting that Gupta will likely be Obama's choice to head the office of the Surgeon General. Kurtz goes on to say that Gupta "has told the administration officials that he wants the job and the final vetting process is underway"

Gupta a Michigan born son of Indian/Pakistani decent denies the rumours but insiders see the appointment as a fore gone conclusion.

With this Gupta choice in the works, someone on Twitter suggested Judge Judy for Surgeon General. Ha!

Well, I think Dr. Gupta has much more to offer than Judge Judy. Along with playing a doctor on TV (kidding he doesn't do that), he is a practicing neurosurgeon and had a past appointment to the White House. In 1997, he was chosen as a White House Fellow — one of only 15 fellows appointed. He served as special adviser to first lady Hillary Clinton.
