Cole Goforth Sent Home From Greenbrier High School For Wearing T-Shirt
Cole Goforth, 15, was sent home from Greenbrier High School in Tennessee on Monday April 5 for wearing a t-shirt that said 'I Heart Lady Gay Gay', which is a take on the musician Lady Gaga.
Cole Goforth does not try to hide the fact that he is gay, but his mother said that the school is violating his freedom of speech and his right to express himself as other children who wear t-shirts with religious slogans or pictures or with rebel flags on them are not sent home according to WSMV Nashville. Cole was not punished for the shirt.
An administrator saw Cole wearing the shirt and told him to remove it.
"She said I had to remove the shirt that it was going to cause disruption in the school," said Cole.
However, Cole has worn t-shirts to school in the past with the word 'gay' on them, so his mother believes that is not so much about the shirt, as about the image her son is projecting.
"I think they are singling him out, I really do, and they've made statements that if he wore this in California, he'd fit in just fine," said Julie Gordon.
Schools in Robertson County are allowed to interpret and address their own dress code as they see fit and the rules do state that a principal can take necessary action if they feel a student's dress will cause a disruption.
"We've had a few disruptions the last few days, and we thought the slogan on that shirt would continue to escalate those incidents that had occurred," said Danny Weeks, assistant director of the school board.
Cole thinks he is just being singled out and his mother agrees that if one shirt with a slogan is going to be addressed then all shirts with slogans should be addressed. She has the right to appeal the dress code if she wishes.

Its honestly tough being gay when your younger. I did not have the guts to let people know I am gay during those years. I could not imagine how hard it would be to address this while in high school. Kids coming down on another kid is an unfortunate part of life. When an adult demeans a youth its unacceptable, and just pathetic. Which is exactly what these teachers/school authorities have done. Where I am from this wouldn't stand. It has been in my experience that people who are in some way uncomfortable with themselves have a problem with gay people. Who do you have teaching your kids Tennessee?

As you may have heard there is a controversial argument in the state of Tennessee. There is of course a side to every story. The nation has picked sides and it will be hard to find an unbiased statement. Allow me to shed some light on the story. The story has to begin when the main affected character, Cole, first moved to Greenbrier, TN. He lived a quiet life as many middle school students do. It wasn’t until news of his sexuality started swarming about he began to show his true identity. His clothes began to change from the normal A&F to smaller more feminine shirts. Since everyone already knew of his status it wasn’t a disruption, just a minor discussion topic at lunch. As the year went by he began to… make passes. He would approach male students and whisper rude, sexual remarks in their ears. All of which can be confirmed. He was involved in many fights. All of which “he provoked”. The year ended and life went on as it had. High school I feel is the biggest pain for Cole. On the first day he had this pink hair. It was a hot pink and by the next day the color was gone. His freshman year went by until recently. He had been involved in a fight with a female student. Remarks were made and Cole was “responsible.” Monday was a different day. As soon as Cole entered the school all eyes focused on him and his shirt, rumors started. By mid-morning it had escalated and the school was buzzing with gossip and ridicule. As the news verified Cole was asked to remove the shirt. He retired to his home that day after going to the school board. Then, the news happened. It only caused more of a disturbance. No student or faculty member accepted the fact he took it to WSMV. The school had more to talk and joke about. Talking about his interview and how his mom overreacted. I don’t mean to be narcissistic, but I feel I should be the one on the news. I am the only one in this nation that takes up for both sides. The school did not want another fight to break out. There have been two in the past week. Yes there were other options for them to take, but they were overwhelmed. They hadn’t come across anyone like Cole in the Past. If it wasn’t to keep the sanity of the school, then it was to protect Cole. If he had continued to wear that shirt a fight was bound to happen, no doubt. The rural atmosphere cannot handle change. There are set customs and ethics all people have to obey to be accepted. Yes, the south is still mad they lost the war and yes they need to grow up. They have their morals that aren’t accepted elsewhere. Personally I did not choose a side. I prefer large cities and do not intend to spend my whole life the south. The south isn’t to blame for any of this. Opinions can be stated and the extent of the opinions is up for debate. Let it go America. It was supposed to be a statement to the school not the world. Quite honestly, I, as a student at Greenbrier, believe that people are blowing this way out of proportion. I see news articles that he was expelled and discriminated against, and I laugh at all of them because they aren't true. HE wasn't being discriminated against. In our school, ANY shirt that expresses any kind of sexuality is prohibited. It wasn't because of the bloody homosexuality issue. It was because of the nature it expressed.

don't you mean "you're gay"?

bored with it (that's what the name should say.) Anyway, yeah I have to say J.D. is right. That is exactly the high school life of Cole. And yeah I gotta say, we have a LOT of rednecks here who just don't see any point to homosexuality. Fights would be started and it's just not worth it to wear a shirt and risk getting the crap beaten out of you. It's cloth that someone in Honduras or wherever made. It is not a god.

he is so gay and rude man i meen this kid is not what u think guys he makes rude remarks to people and tells them that he wants to do sexual things to people so thats why no body likes him and you might be wondering how i know this and its because i go to greenbrier high school and im also one of the kids he fought and i fought him because he said some rude remarks about my mother and it made me mad so i fought him and i dont regret it. Thats what he gets for saying and acting the way he does and i thought the people should know that about cole since they say greenbrier has mean kids.

Cole is a kind, wonderful, and considerate young man. As one of Cole's former teachers, there is absolutely no basis to your comment. It's a homophobic, unfounded attack on a young person and has NO merit to the issue at hand. "Those who live in glass houses should never throw stones."

I believe anyone who posts a comment saying "I hate fags" doesnt even know the dictonary meaning of the word "fag" and you cannot spell or properly type worth a piece of shit, so please stop hating and stop fighting of stupid crap. This kid did not deserve this and you need to read the schools policy it is not against school rules to wear shirts that say the word "gay" the school board even announced that themself.

And obviously your school has "mean kids" you are proof of that fighting a kid over their sexuality and saying "i hate fags" homophobia is so ridicolous
