About one-third of the U.S. population may be at a specific risk for gum disease. That is the percentage of Americans who are also obese; and among all of the problems obesity is linked to, gum disease has emerged. Time to look after one’s oral health.
Obesity is already a massive health concern, raising one’s risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and certain forms of cancer. And those are just the biggies. Now researchers suspect a link exists between obesity and gum disease. Obese individuals’ bodies relentlessly produce “cytokines,” which are proteins known to spark inflammation. These cytokines may directly injure the gum tissues or reduce blood flow to the gum tissues, and disease can result.
