Popular Orange County Mega Church Crystal Cathedral Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Crystal Cathedral the popular mega church found by evangelist Robert H. Schuller, has filed for protection from its creditors via a bankruptcy filing the Orange County Register is reporting.

In a statement issued Monday, Senior Pastor Sheila Schuller Coleman said the bankruptcy filing was a necessity because a "small number of creditors chose to file lawsuits and obtained writ of attachment." She said the cathedral also had no choice because a committee of creditors decided not to extend a moratorium to allow continued talks about a payment plan. "For these reasons, the Ministry now finds it necessary to seek the protection of a Chapter 11," she said.

The shinning glass facade of the Crystal Cathedral has made it a tourist attraction in Cathedral Grove area of Orange County.  The Hour of Power television program produced by Crystal Cathedral International Ministries has made the mega church popular across the United States.

But the church finds itself $55 million in debt.
