DASH Diet Ranked Best Overall Diet in New Poll
U.S. News and World Report released its annual “best diets” list on Tuesday and the DASH diet is listed as the best diet to follow to avoid developing diabetes.
The Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine have published a Boston University study that suggests that the DASH diet plan may help reduce the risk of obesity in teenage girls. The study surveyed more than 2,300 girls every year, beginning at age 9, and following them for 10 years.
The DASH diet consists of eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats and avoiding highly-processed foods that contain a lot of starch and white sugars, such as potato chips.
DASH principles are seen in the U.S. government’s construction of the well-known food pyramid, which breaks down what Americans should be eating everyday to maintain their overall health. The U.S. army similarly recommends a DASH-type plan to help reduce incidents of hypertension among the troops.
Experts believe that the while the DASH diet may be best in overall health, the best diet for you may depend on your goals. If your goal is to achieve weight loss, diets such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, are higher in the rankings than the DASH diet.
