I don't have kids, but I've got friends in the industry who have pretty much told me to never trust a daycare with your kids. I've heard way too many horror stories to ever trust them, but what real alternate do parents have?

A Sioux Falls woman charged with an aggravated assault charge after a child at her in-home daycare suffered what police call “severe head injuries” told police she lost her temper when the baby wouldn't stop crying.

Amy Marie Dierks, 27, was arrested at her residence at 7613 W. Legacy St. at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and lodged in the Minnehaha County Jail pending a $500,000 cash bond.

Police Lt. Mark Jensen said the victim, a 6-month-old boy identified only as H.J.J. in court papers, was in a coma-like state at Sanford Health. The child’s parents are identified in an affidavit as Steve Lyle Johnson and Marissa Johnson.

Scary stuff. I don't have kids either, but my sister does. She and her husband have somehow managed to keep their careers (part-time) AND stay home with the kids. I think it's possible if you're creative with how you go about it and you're not stuck with traditional ideas about gender roles. At least so says this non-parent.

We have a 2 year old and stories like this remind me why we both work seperate schedules just so we don't have to have someone watch him. I had not heard of this story yet. Thanks
