As a health professional and a bit of a techno geek, I was interested when I read about a company called Diabetes Detection Inc.. They have taken devices such as a Blackberry and turned it into a powerful diagnostic tool.

A half of all people with diabetes will develop some form of
neuropathy; which means they will experience damage to the nerves of
the peripheral nervous system. This can result in severe situations,
such as a loss of a limb. Early detection of neuropathy is a key factor
in preventing progression of the disease.

Until now, many physicians simply used tuning forks or vibrameters
to determine the presence and levels of neuropathy. Diabetes Detection,
Inc. has developed a technology that interacts with cellphones, pagers
and pda's. Using the vibration frequencies already present in these
devices, the technology allows them to be used as diagnostic tools for
detecting neuropathy.

Hopefully the ease of use and availability of this weapon against
diabetes complications will result in an improved quality of life for
those suffering from this horrible disease.

kerren, I can't say I completely understand this new detection method but it sure seems fascinating and like a great step forward in the prevention of neuropathy.
