NP Rank:
Diabetes II Solution could be Obesity Surgery
In two new studies the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery found that both lapband and gastric bypass surgery can help eliminate diabetes.
The effect of this surgery has been known for a while, these studies; however, find that the effects can be long lasting.
In one study the New York University School of Medicine looked at 95 severely obese persons, with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 46 or more. These patients had .underwent a temporary form of stomach reduction, called laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB).
These patients were able to either go off or reduce diabetes medicine for up to five years.
New research is revealing that obesity surgery does more than simply help patients lose weight; it may also "cure" type 2 diabetes for five years or longer.
In two new studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, researchers have found that both "lap band surgery" and gastric bypass surgery can help eliminate diabetes.
While previous studies have made similar findings, this new research finds that the effects can be long-lasting.
In one study, researchers at New York University School of Medicine looked at 95 morbidly obese patients, with an average BMI (body mass index) of 46, who underwent a temporary form of stomach reduction, called laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB).

This could be really good news.

I think a healthy life stile and physical work may be better then surgery here.

If the lifestyle had been healthy to start out with, I would agree Paschen. The problem is that some people are beyond that. Without the surgery they would probably not be able to start an exercise program.
Obesity is at epidemic levels in North America and so is Type II Diabetes. Not all Type II Diabetes is due to obesity, but it is widely believed that it is enhanced by obesity.

I understand and agree, however, prevention is always cheeper and better then cure.
The point being that this should not be needed in the first place and will cost money, that could have been avoided would we live responsibly and respectfully.

I agree, unfortunately it isn't so. This affects a large segment of the population, including children now too.
