As I was browsing the net I came upon a picture with a womens foot surrounded by Carp.

These fish started there "job" in Turkey  and to VA. They have also  became popular in some Asian countries.  Their job is to eat away the dead skin cells on the human foot, part of a pedicure treatment. The reason they started using these fish is because the razors that were normally used had fallen out of favor with the state regulators due to the concerns of whether they were sanitary or not.

The owner of 'Yvonne Hair and Nails Salon' in Alexandria, VA, John Ho states "This is a good treatment for everyone who likes to have nice feet." He wasn't sure how well it would go at  first, but decided to try it anyways. 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far and loved the experience. Doctor Fish, aka garra rufa, have no teeth, so they are harmless. The women in the picture said, "I'd been an athlete all my life, so I've always had calluses on my feet. This was the first time somebody got rid of my calluses completelyIt kind of feels like your foot's asleep."

The fish don't do the job alone. After about 15 to 30 minutes in the tank, customers get a standard pedicure.  Carp just make the feet softer and easier to manage. And after everythings said and done, you have beautiful healthy feet.

So if your looking for something new to do, and are traveling and happen to be in Alexandria, VA. Go to Yvonne Hair and Nails Salon, and let the doctor fish tickle while they clean.

This has been around for quite some time in Asia - "Fish foot spas"..  Went for a couple sessions recently - ticklish at first but it gets to be quite therapeutic after awhile.  Don't really experience dramatic changes before/after the spa sessions tho'.. but maybe the effect differs from individual to individual.  Overall, a rather relaxing thing to do after a long day's work or on a lazy Sunday afternoon.. :)

It was just outlawed in the State of Washington.

The Doctor Fish therapy is picking up momentum in Asian countries. It does clear the bad cells and the fish does suck out the parasites.
