Doctors Remove Chopstick from 14-Month-Old Li Jingchao's Brain
Doctors at the Bo Ai Hospital in Beijing, China removed a chopstick from 14-month-old Li Jinchao's brain after the toddler fell onto a chopstick he was playing with while his mother was doing the dishes. Jingchao's family travelled some 10 hours North from their home in the Shandong province to Beijing, where the hospitals were better equipped to complete the neurosurgery.
According to a report released by the hospital, the 14-month-old arrived with an irregular heartbeat and a high fever. The chopstick was lodged 4 millimetres into the toddler's brain. Neurosurgeons were concerned with the outcome of the surgery, fearing the removal of the chopstick would result in internal haemorrhaging, leading to paralysis and potentially even death.
According to the hospital spokesman, Mr. Chen Yawei, the neurosurgeon on the case was the perfect choice having had extensive experience with removing chopsticks from eyes, foreheads, and necks.
Ultimately the surgery was a success; "luckily, the removal resulted in little bleeding and he suffered only an infection,"said Mr. Chen.
Li Jingchao is scheduled to be released from the hospital in a week.
