A new study published in the Archives of Neurology has found that drinking alcohol, even at low amounts, shrinks the brain and can cause dementia.

"The take-home message is that, if you drink a lot, you're going to hurt your brain," said Rajesh Miranda, an associate professor of neuroscience and experimental therapeutics at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. "This is something we knew, but this is a huge study that quantifies that."

These findings contradict previous studies that showed moderate drinking could actually improve cognitive ability and decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease.  Researchers were hoping that moderate amounts of alcohol, which can help prevent heart disease, would protect the brain from age-induced shrinkage, which occurs naturally at a rate of about 2% every 10 years, but their findings showed that any level of alcohol leads to a decline in brain volume.

It's not clear why even modest amounts of alcohol may shrink the brain, although alcohol is "known to dehydrate tissues, and constant dehydration can have negative effects on any sensitive tissue," says Paul.

"We always knew that alcohol at higher dosages results in shrinking of the brain and cognitive deficit," says Dr. Petros Levounis, M.D., director of the Addiction Institute of New York at St. Luke's -- Roosevelt Hospital Center, who was not involved in the study. "What is new with this article is that it shows brain shrinking at lower doses of alcohol."

One small scrap of good news: the study did not find that decreased brain volume had any negative effects on memory or mental function.  The differences were actually quite small between abstainers (no drinking) and heavy drinkers (14+ drinks a week) - less than 1.5% - so if you're going to drink I recommend you go all the way and just enjoy yourself!

Terri Potratz, I like this story. It's good stuff.  I think we all knew this anyway (the link between alcohol and dementia).

At least short-term dementia ;)

Well what about drinking and then surfing the net? That should balance it all out!

You could even try doing both togerther!  (All in the cause of scientific progress, of course.)

Drinking and surfing the net, while playing a video game with your mind.  This is getting carried away.
