Drug Residues Tainting Our Water and Our Fish
Close to 50% of Americans take one prescription drug every month, and that number has been increasing over the last 10 years. But while many studies have looked at the negative side effects of prescription drugs, only recently have researchers begun to understand that these drugs might even affect our water and the fish we eat. How? Well, about 50% to as much as 90% of the active ingredients in prescription drugs cannot be absorbed by our bodies. That means we excrete them and they enter our sewage systems and are then released into our waters.
