The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a health warning regarding the possible contamination of ground beef by E. coli bacteria.  The strain is 0157:H7, the one that can cause multiple organ failure and death.  The disease was first diagnosed when undercooked hamburgers from a fast food outlet caused widespread sickness and death and came to be known as hamburger disease.

Most E. coli bacteria cause no problems to us. Warm blooded animals shelter them in their colons.  In fact, humans harbour billions of the little critters in our lower bowels.  They make up a large part of the solid waste that we excrete.  We benefit from E. coli in various ways.  The problems arise when the bacteria get into places they don't belong.

When you are getting contamination of meat by E. coli, it means that some of the cow poop was mixed in with the meat. 

This alert follows closely on the one for contaminated veal(baby beef).

The food alert posted by the CFIA did not disclose the slaughterhouse that the possibly contaminated meat came from.  They did disclose that the meat has been distributed to:  BC, Manitoba, NWT and Ontario.
