E. coli O157:H7 Bacteria in Beef Recall Expands
Beef products sourced from the JBS Swift Beef Company, Greeley, Colorado may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The recall orders started in the US have now expanded to Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada stores. E. coli 0157:H7 is the bacterium associated with the term hamburger disease. Food contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7 may not look or smell 'off'. Heat will kill the bacteria, but the danger of cross contamination of kitchen surfaces means that beef must be handled carefully. Ground beef is at most risk for contamination as the grinding process distributes any E. coli 0157:H7 throughout the meat. This recall encompasses ground beef, roasts and steaks.
WASHINGTON, June 28, 2009 - JBS Swift Beef Company, a Greeley, Colo., establishment is voluntarily expanding its June 24 recall to include approximately 380,000 pounds of assorted beef primal products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The distribution of possibly contaminated beef in the US has been nationwide, and as we are now informed, internationally.
Those living in the US may get further information about food safety by contacting "Ask Karen"
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a list of possibly contaminated beef products sold from Ontario east as well as the stores where these beef products were sold.

Why are we getting our meat for Colorado? We have cows here in the Atlantic provinces. We need to put pressure on local stores to buy and sell local product!!

Of course you are right. Here on Vancouver Island our small meat producers have just about shut down their operations because of the draconian regs imposed on them. We have never had a food scare from locally produced beef. When you move to huge feedlot operations and massive slaughterhouses, you are just asking for trouble. I think the meat from out of the country has something to do with the Free Trade Agreement.
