Eating Veggies shrinks the brain
This is very bizzare. Basically this research shows that by going strictly green, you are lacking valuable vitamins you will be receiving if you are eating meat. This vitamin B12 deficiency also causes anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system.
Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.
Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.
How the test was conducted:
The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.
When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.
I don't know what this research is telling us to do. I doubt this will turn any vegetarians back to eating meat but its just good to know that lacking Vitamin B12 is associated with brain shrinkage.

Interesting article.

This research would also find deficiencies in a diet of strictly meat. Or strictly biscuits. Or strictly concrete. Or strictly nuts. Yes, wonderfully researched scientific point that vegetables alone won't provide 100 percent of a body's nutritional requirements. I wonder how much money was wasted on this study.
Anyone who studies the human diet, meat-eater or vegetarian, knows that you must consume a variety of foods to meet our nutritional requirements. It is entirely possible to meet those needs on an omnivore or herbivore diet, but it must be balanced, i.e. add grains and fruits, and we all must eat specific things to achieve optimal health. Lettuce alone, liver alone, or cake alone will make anyone's brain shrink.

Woo Hoo! I feel even better about giving up vegetarianism after 7 years... hope my brain grows back! This explains a lot... ;-) thanks for requesting my photo.

Eating veggies shrinks the brain? Sensationalist journalism at its... no, not even at its best. Eating veggies will not shrink your brain. Eating a diet that is unbalanced will make you unhealthy. Not getting the proper nutrients? OK. Skipping vitamin B12. Fine. But eating veggies will shrink your brain? Come ON. You absolutely HAVE to pick better titles than this for your stories!

JeffHuang, I like this story. It's good stuff.
Rob Peters had a post out about this subject. The research he was Posting stated that our brains do well or better with high protein diet of cooked food rather then with raw vegetable and fruits or meat. Meaning that the cooking process is actually what helps the needed Protein to be absorbed by the Brain or to reach the Brain. Even Soya would be fine as Brain food if cooked and processed.
at 20:39 on September 15th, 2008
You are correct. As omnivores we need a large variety of food groups and combinations.
Some Vitamins can only be absorbed by us with Fat, meaning we need to eat the Fruit as well as some meat at the same time or with in a meal in order to be able to actually absorb the vitamins we just ate.

Well, I took this photo as I was grilling my porkchops!! If you are an adult and don't want to eat meat for whatever reason, that is fine. But when you have children, regardless of your your eating habits, your children need the proper nutrition that is found not only in veggies, but in meat as well.

A balanced diet of small amounts of all food types is the healthy way to go and has been common knowledge for years in nutritionist circles as far as I'm aware.. I agree with all that Decomprose says.
at 05:35 on September 16th, 2008
I'm no fan of sensational journalism, which this article is akin to. However, I'm fine with adding my photo's if it will make someone hungry for vegetables or want to support their local farmers.

I'm allowing my photo to be used for this, but my advice to the author is to improve your research.. don't take studies and reports at face value. As stated above, any diet that cuts out a variety of foods -- vegetarian or high-protein, or otherwise -- is going to be lacking in the vitamins and nutrients we need. The key to being a healthy vegetarian, vegan, or even omniore, is to supplement your diet with the vitamins and other key nutrients that you miss from your daily intake of food. There's a lot of us out there who are living a meat-free lifestyle and who maintain perfectly healthy diets at the same time. Vitamin deficiencies may shrink brain matter, but its sensational and irresponsible reporting to link it to "Eating Veggies" as your title suggests.

That sounds really crazy. I bet you do lose some vitamins by not eating meat, humans are carnivorous for a reason but I doubt you lose brain power.

The vegans I know regularly consume nutritional yeast flakes in their diets, usually making a cheese substitute out of it. They seem as healthy as can be... B12 must be plentiful in these yeast flakes.

Photo was taken at the Logan Square Sunday Market, Chicago, Ill while on a visit there. They had lovely veggies, cheeses, food items.
This farm was heirloom and organic both things I like to support. Of course in my youth we just grew stuff this way and didn't know we were the future. It is a pleasure to see all the variety of colors and textures.

There isn't anything better than fresh vegetables from the garden or a farmer's market. These vegetables were all picked on the same day from our garden and I couldn't resist capturing them in a photo.

This illustrates, I think, the importance of having a very well balanced diet. If you don't eat meat, you need to be sure you use food combining to get the protein that your brain needs.

At my house I'm a up a coming culinary author and food photographer and I shot this photo of my Saturday lunch. I also attached this photo to a forum post on a social network site I'm apart of and that particular topic was asking for suggestions and advice of how to incorporate more veggies and other foods that are good for you into your diet. This photo and the recipe was shot and posted in response to that.

Yeah, when you eat meat you won't live until that ages.. mentioned here.. He..heee! better to be a vegetarian..!!! Funny! Do they think vegetarians mean that they only eat vegetables...It goes along with cereals, pulses, grains, bread and green leaves. It is stupid to say that meat is nutiritious.. The best joke of 2008!
at 06:24 on September 17th, 2008
I have to ask my grandparents who are still living ( aged 96 and 87).. They remember me still.... Probably this might be to boost the sales of meat...!!! Very funny! If anybody wants to eat "nothing" , go for meat.
